Capture Quality Confidence

This article is part of a series. See Introduction to Camera Features to start.

Captured image histogram

Confidence that a capture has been made of maximal quality is often hard to come by. A key factor is a quality histogram or the taken shot.

  • HIGH ON THE LIST: true raw histogram, critical for assessing actual raw capture dynamic range remaining (or blowout) independent of color space and JPEG processing settings.
  • Histogram should be large size for seeing small issues.
  • Must support wide gamut color space for RGB histogram (AdobeRGB does not qualify).
  • Zooming in with RGB histogram should show histogram for zoomed area only (critical to not blowing out small but important areas)
  • Auditory feedback varying in some manner to indicate blowout or pinning blacks.

Sony Nikon Fujifilm Canon Panasonic Leica
histogram too small for accurate evaluation, no zoom histogram best of breed but lacks true raw histogram no zoom histogram no zoom histogram no zoom histogram TBD
All brands lack a true raw histogram, all lack auditory feedback, all lack wide gamut support.
