Olympus OM-1 Announced, Available for PreOrder
Call me confused on the Olympus OM-1 nomenclature given the Olympus E-M1 Mark II and Olympus E-M1 Mark III, but I am glad to see that the Micro Four Thirds Format is going to retain the Olympus brand in its fold.
20MP Stacked Sensor and TruePic X
Micro Four Thirds BSI Live MOS Sensor Newly designed 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor features a stacked BSI design that offers improved readout speeds, noise levels, and greater dynamic range than previous designs. This sensor structure improves noise performance by two stops and dynamic range by one stop for improved image quality, especially at higher ISOs.
The improvement-in-noise claims are perhaps unprecedented; usually it is on the order of 1/3 or 1/2 stop with a newer-model camera. The claim is that with 1/4 the light (two stops), the noise performance is the same. Personally, I’d rather have it at 40MP at ISO 50, but that would be a very different sensor design.
The main thing seems to be the ability to record at 120 fps! That’s with fixed focus, or 50 fpgs with continuous AF. That’s a feature that is not approachable in full frame cameras, AFAIK.
It’s a tough proposition though—selling a small sensor camera into the full-frame mirrorless market.
Still the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO is the lens to have with this camera, a key raison d^etre. I also think the Panasonic 8mm f/3.5 is a lens for which no full-frame equivalent exists, at least not anything viable for things like this. And the Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH is a stunningly beautiful lens.
