It seems that no camera is free of some kind of sensor quality defect )—see in particular the Fujifilm GFX100S and Sony A1 links above.
I had speculated that because the Panasonic S1R lacks PDAF pixels, it might exhibit higher image quality. But apparently every camera has its own problems.
Shown below, whether standard resolution or multi-shot high-res mode, the Panasonic S1R when pushed hard in monochrome conversion can pop into exisence a vertical band showing sensor bifurcation, similar to but worse than what is seen in the Leica M10 Monochrom and many other cameras (under the right conditions).
Not only that, the Panasonic S1R multi-shot high-res mode show fine horizontal lines, as seen in the sky.
So much for speculation! It’s always good to check reality preferentially.
While the noise level of the S1R multi-shot high-res mode files is extremely low (equivalent to ISO 6), that does not yield artifact free conversions to monochrome with aggressive settings.
