Apple Airpods Max: gorgeous design, but are they competitive with my Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise-Canceling Headphones?

Noise cancellationis not an option for me, as I remain somewhat sensitive to noise since my 2018 concussion. And the 2-years-running house construction next-door is an ongoing stressor, with rock cutting, heavy equipment, etc—a headache every day of the work week (one reason I have spent so much time away from home).

Brain-Saver: Sony Noise-Canceling Headphones... will Sony In-Ear Noise Canceling Earphones Also Work Well?.

I am dubious that Apple can perform noise cancellation as well as Sony, but Apple gets the prize for stylishness. Problem is, so many Apple design prioritize form before function. Because I value functionality (noise-cancellation) first and foremost, I am open to getting the Apple headphones, but quite skeptical that Apple can beat out the Sony WH-1000XMX4.
