Fujifilm Shakes Up the Medium Format Market with 100 Megapixel Fujifilm GFX-100 and Low-Cost Fujifilm GFX-50R

Thank you for ordering through my links at B&H Photo!

The about $4500 Fujifilm GFX 50R is a 50-megapixel compact medium format camera taking the same lenses as the Fujifilm GFX-50S. I expect it to be the most popular medium format camera ever, shaking up the medium format market with a new low price of entry.

A key point for pros is that Fujifilm and Phase One announced that Capture One will soon support full tethered shooting for the FujifilmGFX-50S, Fujifilm GFX-50R and Fujifilm X-T series cameras, including RAW processing for all GFX and X-series cameras.

If that were not enough, Fujifilm’s announced Fujifilm GFX-100 shakes up the medium format market not on price alone, but also in busting into the 100 megapixel arena at an expensive low price of about US$10000. I’m a bit puzzled at the high price, but maybe the yields for that sensor are low, making it more expensive than the same-size 50-megapixel sensor? At any rate, it drops the price of 100 megapixels to 1/3 or so of where it has been. Hopefully we will see 100 megapixels at $6K or so within a year.

Back in 2013 I asked whether Is the Full Frame DSLR the New Medium Format? What do DSLRs Lack? Then in 2016 I wrote that Fujifilm GFX 50S Disrupts the Medium Format (and 35mm) Marketplace.

Here in 2018, medium format is alive and well and seems to be becoming the new full frame. Give it a year or two, and I expect prices to drop substantially and medium format cameras become the de-facto high-end formerly occupied by 35m DSLRs.
