Early Winter in the Sierra

Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L III

The about $2199 Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L III seems to be quite a nice lens, but I can’t properly evaluate it in the field on a laptop.

The early and deep snowfall made it difficult to go very high yesterday. Here at about 10,300' elevation, the snow is only about 6 inches deep (having compacted down to a relatively hard layer), and drifted to 18 inches in places, but about 500 feet higher it was about a foot deep and drifted up to 5 feet deep.

The early and heavy snow sucks in one way: the higher lakes instead of developing beautiful clear ice instead absorbed two feet or so of snow, turning into a thick dull gray opaque slush ice. Not very photogenic as compared to crystal clear water under transparent ice.
