Shootout: Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA vs Rokinon FE 50mm /1.4 (Dolls, Sony A7R II)
See my Sony mirrorless wish list at B&H Photo.
I always like to shoot a close range subject before going afield with a lens, as it can be very instructive. This close-range scene proved to be highly instructive in revealing behaviors around sharpness, focus shift, secondary color correction and distortion. It’s a bit unusual to learn so much in one sitting so I’m very pleased. I have to laugh at the exuberant myopia of lab tests.
This is probably all you need to know about these two lenses, and given the price of the Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA, worth the subscription to Guide to Mirrorless all on its own if purchase is the goal.
Shootout: Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA Shootout vs Rokinon FE 50/1.4 AF (Dolls)
Includes images up to 28 megapixels from f/1.4 through f/11 for both lenses. Also includes many large crops with commentary and analysis, again from f/1.4 - f/11.
An interesting finding with the Sony 50/1.4 is shown that must be understood for best results.
I’m thinking to have a look at the diminutive Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 and the Sony 55mm f/2.8 Sonnar, although 55mm is problematic vs 55mm, since 50mm captures 20% more area; a direct comparison is awkward at best.
