Fujifilm camera bodies preceding the X-Pro2 have all had what I term fractal-like artifacts which crop up regularly, particularly with natural textures. See the various examples including with different raw converters in the review of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and review of the Fujifilm X-E1 (“Fractal-like Artifact...”).
I “knew” in a logical sense that the 24MP sensor of the Fujifilm X-Pro2 held no real hope for eliminating the fractal artifacts, since all its X-Trans sensor predecessors share the same technology, albeit at 16MP. Yet assumptions no matter how logically derived must be validated by proofs.
This page shows the behavior at various sharpening settings so that a reader can come to a personal opinion as to whether the Fujifilm X fractal-like digital artifacts are attractive, inconsequential, ugly or unacceptable—or any combination thereof.

This is a serious study of imaging quality that ought to be useful to any Fujifilm X shooter. It includes the full-res image and two large crops at eight different sharpening settings, along with an extended discussion.
The reduced size image here does not show the issue, since downsampling cleans up all sorts of digital artifacts.
