UPDATE: I’ve determined the cause of the checkerboarding issue, and I’ve updated my page accordingly.
Wanting to explore the SuperResolution pixel shift mode of the Pentax K1 ahead of time, I asked B&H Photo for a loaner Pentax K3 II, along with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Pentax (and Pentax 31/1.8).
Ironically, when I go looking for higher image quality, literally the very first frames I shoot all show a problem!
The K3 II arrived today and lo—the first six frames all show what I call a “checkerboard defect”. Subsequent frames did not show the effect, and as yet I don’t know if it is some combination of camera settings that is responsible, or if it is simply a bug.
I should note that the camera malfunctioned (hung) for 20 minutes during its pixel check function, ultimately forcing me to pull the battery. So it’s also possible that this particular camera body has a problem.
