Focus Shift with the Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G on D800E
Added to Making Sharp Images is a new study of focus shift with the Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G. It includes two series, one focused at f/2.8 and one focused at f/5.6, which allows a differential comparison compensating for the shift.
UPDATE: now cross-posted in DAP in Focus Shift: Nikon 14-24 Across The Frame, Focus f/2.8 vs f/5.6 (Cabin).
This study preceeds a comparison with the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 Distagon, coming soon.
While I’ve documented focus shift with the Nikon 14-24/2.8G before, this presentation yields new insights into the focus shift of the Nikon 14-24 I had not realized before, and which users of the 14-24 should be keenly aware of when looking for maximum full-frame sharpness.

The said article/study is stunningly good science and writing, as expected. Just exquisite. Thank you for that.
Cant wait to see your Yosemite pics.
DIGLLOYD: Thank you. I had to study those images a while to figure out what was happening. Sometimes it takes the right scene to really figure things like this out!

Thank you for the beautiful 14-24mm insight.
Now we know what it does on the 2-5 m range I am sure there will be even more new things to discover at say 20 -50 m or infinity...
DIGLLOYD: it is possible the behavior changes at infinity focus. I have not yet taken these findings “further afield” in that regard.
